When the violent centurion Manlius tries to steal his family's land, Aulus Lucinus Spurinna must journey to Rome to get help from his family's protector, Cicero. Aulus is soon enmeshed in the Catilinarian Conspiracy of 63 BC. Even with help from Homer (his overeducated servant) and Tullia (a clever but mysterious girl), he finds the Eternal City a dangerous place indeed.
